The Co-operative movement

The Co-operative movement

Like Charisma nd Trade Unionism,Co-operation also was started as a working class movement. The frst experimentation in cooperation were made by Robert Owen in london when the workers failed to get the help of the government.Following Owen’s example, some Lancashire weavers opened a little shore at Rochdale in 1844.They realized that self help was the best and hence cooperated with one another for the sake of mutual help.

The cooperative store of the Rochdale Poineers bought and sold goods, and the dividents were distributed among the registered members.BY 1860 such cooperative societies became numerous.Soon cooperation sread from buying and distributing to other field like that of manufacturing. The growth of the cooperative movement has been so great that more than one third of the english are now members of the cooperative societies.
Thus the idea of cooperation originated in england and now it has sread all over the civilized world .Although co-operation was begun as a working class movement ,it now become a regular feature of modern life.
