RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) — A Brazilian court has sentenced a farmer to seven years and 10 months in prison for forcing 59 people to work in slave-like conditions.
According to written decision issued yesterday by federal judge Cesar de Matos, Avelino de Dea keeps 3,000 head of cattle on his farm in Itupiranga, in the state of Para.
The workers were found clearing land and building fences in 2007 by the Ministry of Labor's mobile action unit.
The judge said the workers were paid irregularly, had no protection from pesticides and no bathrooms. They had to drink and bathe in a small, muddy stream also used by cattle.
Foreman Jose Vanzetto was sentenced to five years and seven months. Both were found guilty in November.
